The Big South
For a while I was held by the myth of the lost highway
In the spell of the night and the lights of the great white way
I ain't lonely
Are you?Long Lost - Lord Huron
El Sur Grande
Between the cypress trees of Carmel, California, and the infamous Hearst Castle of San Simeon, stand the towering San Lucia mountains that overlook that vast and cold pacific ocean. As Highway 1 winds its way through the rugged coastline; sea otters, humpback whales, seals, and much more marine life inhabit the vibrant coast thanks to the cold ocean current coming from the pacific northwest.
In the early 1800s, this unexplored section of land was named “El Sur Grande”, which translates directly to “The Big South”. Over the years as this area gained interest from its neighboring cities, and soon the world, it became known as Big Sur.
The collection of images below were captured between 2021 and 2022. For the year that I have lived a short 15 miles from the area, I frequented the rocky coast and photographed along the way. This frequent documentation for me turned into a collection of photographs that remind me of my time living in California and visiting this area with my family. Please enjoy the images and take a moment to transport yourself to somewhere quiet, brisk, and beautiful.
